Caitlin Sampaio Mulholland

Caitlin Sampaio Mulholland (PhD and Master’s degrees in Civil Law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro – UERJ, 2006 and 2002) is an Associate Professor of Civil Law at the Department of Law of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), where she currently serves as Director of the Law Department. She is also a professor in the Graduate Program in Constitutional Law and Theory of the State at PUC-Rio and coordinates the Legalite Research Center at the university.

She is the author of the books Civil Liability Based on Presumed Causation and Internet and Contracting: An Overview of Electronic Consumer Contractual Relations. She is an editor and contributing author to Institutions of Civil Law, Volume III, by Caio Mário da Silva Pereira, and has coordinated the edited volumes Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD) and the New Brazilian Regulatory Framework and Artificial Intelligence and Law: Ethics, Regulation and Liability.

Caitlin Sampaio Mulholland is a member of the Civil Law Committee of the Rio de Janeiro Section of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) and of the Federal OAB’s Special Commission on Data Protection. She is an associate of the Brazilian Institute of Civil Law (IBDCivil) and of the Association Henri Capitant des Amis de la Culture Juridique Française, as well as a founding associate of the Advanced Institute for Data Protection (IAPD) and of the Brazilian Institute for Studies in Civil Liability (IBERC). Her research and professional experience focus on fundamental rights, constitutional civil law, law and technology, law and artificial intelligence, personal data protection, and civil liability.
